Perry Gerard M.D., M.B.A., C.P.E., F.A.C.R., R.P.A has been involved in teaching for the past 35 years. He utilizes unique teaching methods to educate students, patients, technicians, nurses, allied health professionals, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, medical residents and his fellow physicians. His combination of unique teaching methods are not available elsewhere, and are documented by the many testimonials of the individuals he has taught over the years. He refers to his methods of instruction as “Creative Medical Teaching”. This site is dedicated to creative medical education, patient education, patient safety and quality assurance.
Dr. Gerard is a physician with Board Certifications in Diagnostic Radiology, Nuclear Radiology, and Board Certification in Nuclear Cardiology. He completed his Internship in Categorical Medicine in 1981, Residency in Diagnostic Radiology in 1984 and Nuclear/Imaging Fellowship in 1985. He is Vice Chairman of Radiology at New York Medical College, and Chief of the Division of Nuclear Medicine and Director of the PET-CT Center at Westchester Medical Center, where he is also Director of Radiology IT since November 2009. He is Professor of Radiology and Medicine at New York Medical College. He was also elected to Fellow of the American College of Radiology (F.A.C.R.) on May 5, 2013 (F.A.C.R. is one of the highest honors the ACR can bestow on a radiologist and only 10% of ACR members achieve this distinction). He was formally Chief of the Division of Nuclear Medicine at Maimonides Medical Center in Brooklyn, New York for 20 years and was an Attending Radiologist at Maimonides since 1986. Dr. Gerard was also former Director of Imaging and PET-CT at the Maimonides Cancer Center in Brooklyn, New York. He has expertise in PET/CT, SPECT/CT, Diagnostic and Therapeutic Nuclear Examinations, Ultrasound, CT and General Diagnostic Radiology. He also completed Level II training in Cardiovascular Computed Tomography.
Dr. Gerard is also a graduate of the Touro College Physician Assistant Program and is a Registered Physician Assistant. He received his MBA degree in February 2018 in Health Care Administration and Management. He is also currently enrolled at the Pyzdek Institute for a Lean Six Sigma Black Belt Certification.
Dr. Gerard was presented with the “Teacher Of The Year Award” at New York Medical College on June 16, 2014 from the Residents in the Department of Radiology.
Dr. Gerard has published over 80 Peer Reviewed Articles, including 2 book chapters, has over 275 Exhibits, Posters and Society Presentations, 4 Research/IRB Projects and has presented 40 Patient Education Projects. He has lectured on multiple nuclear medicine and radiology topics including PET/CT and Emergency Nuclear Medicine.
Dr. Gerard is in New York Magazines “Best Doctors” Issue in the specialty of Diagnostic Radiology in 2000, and in the specialty of Nuclear Medicine in 2003, 2004, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011 and 2012. He has also appeared in Castle Connolly “Top Doctors Guide” in the New York Metro Area from 1999 to 2018 and Westchester Magazine Best Doctors in 2015-2018. He also received the Radiology Attending of the Year Award (Resident Recognition Award) in June 2005 at Maimonides Medical Center. He received the Teaching Recognition Award from the Internal Medicine Department at Westchester Medical Center on June 16, 2010. He has also taught the Lucy Squire Radiology Course for many years, previously under the direct supervision of Dr. Squire.
In 2005, Dr. Gerard was contacted by 8 residents in Louisiana from Tulane and Louisiana State University who were devastated by Hurricane Katrina. He tutored them “Pro Bono” for the radiology board examination. Following his instruction, all the residents passed the nuclear section of the radiology oral board examination. This experience appeared in several newspaper articles.
Dr. Gerard is the Founder and Director of the Annual Nuclear Medicine “Hot Seat” Course, an intensive and unique review course for the nuclear section of oral radiology board examination. The 7th and 8th Annual Nuclear Medicine “Hot Seat” Course was held in April 2012 and 2013 and attended by 120 radiology residents national and international (see “Hot Seat” page for course application/brochure and course specifics). He is also currently accepting applications for his new course “Tackle The Core” Nuclear Medicine Board Review Course which has been Updated and Adapted to the new requirements for the upcoming Core Radiology Board Qualifying Examination 2015. Preparation is also for the Radioisotope Safety Examination (RISE).
Dr. Gerard is currently Authoring 2 Books: “All The Missing Pieces” and “Creative Medical Education Tools And Techniques” (Both In Progress). The book “All The Missing Pieces” describes a unique approach to many of the problems people face on a daily basis, personally and in the workplace. It provides a variety of “tried and tested” evaluations, recognition techniques and solutions to these problems. These concepts can be utilized in both the healthcare and business professional setting. Many professionals are currently using his methods.
Dr. Gerard utilizes unique teaching methods that increase learning and enhance memory retention significantly. He has appeared on Channel 7, Channel 4, Channel 5, Channel 31, and has appeared in multiple newspaper articles including: The Daily News, Newsday, The Nassau Herald, The Jewish Weekly, The Brooklyn Spectator and The South Shore Record. He has received commendations on his teaching techniques from The Office of the Borough President of the Borough of Manhattan and the The Mended Hearts Group. His teaching has also been recognized and received commendation by the Joint Commission (JCAHO) for unique methods of patient education and safety. Other commendations he has received include the Touro College Physician’s Assistant Program, The New York Biology Teachers Association, St John’s Law School, The Heart to Heart Group at Maimonides Medical Center, and many other health organizations.

He is the former President of the Brooklyn Radiological Society in 1998. He is Professor of Radiology and Medicine at New York Medical College, Clinical Assistant Professor at Touro College School of Health Sciences, and Clinical Assistant Professor of Pharmacy at the Arnold and Marie Schwartz School of Pharmacy and Health Sciences. He was also the former Assistant Director of the Maimonides Radiology Residency Program under the direction of Dr. David Bryk, and taught an intensive Emergency Room Radiology Course for many years to help prepare radiology residents for radiology “On Call”. Dr. Gerard is also the Medical Adviser for the Health Careers Exploration Program at Coney Island Hospital in Brooklyn, New York (helping and guiding high school students in career decisions), and is also a former volunteer and graduate of the MEDEX program.
Amongst his many other interests, Dr. Gerard is a songwriter and singer and has written 20 original songs, and he is a musician and plays the trumpet, guitar(6 and 12 string), banjo(5 string), banjo/guitar(Deering 6 and 12 string), harmonica and keyboards. He has also studied the art of magic, computer repair and troubleshooting (software and hardware), boating, piloting, motorcycles, martial arts training (Sugar-Ryu Jiu Jitsu and Circle of One Ninjitsu), Unicycling, Ventriloquism, and has significant experience with saltwater and freshwater fishtanks. He is also fluent in Spanish. These are just a few of his many, many hobbies. Dr. Gerard considers himself a rainmaker in the areas of patient education, patient safety, quality assurance service recovery and unique forms of medical teaching. He is considered by many to be a “Renaissance Radiologist”. He assimilates the many unique aspects from each hobby to dynamically enhance his teaching and management skills. Dr. Gerard brings forth his experience in teaching, magic, computers and music to create a teaching atmosphere that allows one to learn at an accelerated rate with a very high knowledge retention. Remember, learning is empowerment. He remains dedicated to the concept and practice of “Creative Medical Teaching”.
Many of Dr. Gerard’s society presentations include those utilizing Balloon Models as a teaching tool, one titled “Utilizing Balloon Models As A New Technique To Teach The Concepts Of Nuclear Cardiology” was presented at the ARRS 110th Annual Meeting in San Diego, California, and 2 projects on Balloon Demonstrations of Common and Uncommon Surgical Procedures were presented at the RSNA 96th Scientific Assembly and Annual Meeting on November 28-December 3, 2010 at McCormick Place, Chicago Illinois. Several balloon educational projects were recently presented at the ARRS 111th Annual Meeting held in May 2011 at the Hyatt Regency Chicago which included projects on mammography, bariatric surgery, pediatric emergency radiology procedures and urologic radiology (all demonstrated utilizing simple balloon models), and all representing a unique teaching technique for resident, medical student, and patient education.
I conditioned Nucs and Dr Gerard helped me prepare for the exam. He is an incredible teacher. He loves nuclear medicine and he loves to teach. He put an incredible amount of time preparing for each of the three sessions we had. He agreed to teach me for a bargain
